How to Use ZeroGPT, Step by Step
ZeroGPT is a free AI detector that runs in a browser and returns a percentage estimate of how AI-generated a piece of text looks. The user interface is simple on purpose, so the walkthrough below is short.
1. Open the tool
Go to zerogpt.com. You do not need an account to use the free detector.
2. Paste text or upload a file
The input panel accepts raw text. You can also upload a .pdf, .doc or .docx file. If you paste from a word processor, click once inside the box first so the text lands cleanly. ZeroGPT works best on English prose that is at least a few paragraphs long.
3. Press Score Now
Press the Score Now button. The site returns a percentage estimate and a short label such as "Your text is Human written" or "Most of your text is AI/GPT generated". The analysis typically takes a few seconds on short samples.
4. Read the highlighted sentences
Below the percentage, ZeroGPT shows the full text with specific sentences highlighted. These are the parts the classifier considers most likely to be AI generated. Reading them in context is more useful than the single top-line number.
5. Review the detail panel
On the right-hand side, ZeroGPT shows a short breakdown: the perplexity-style score it uses, the length of the input, and a confidence note. If the input is too short to be reliable, the tool says so.
What the Percentage Actually Means
ZeroGPT's published rubric groups the result into three bands:
- 0 to 20 percent: labelled as human
- 21 to 79 percent: labelled as mixed or uncertain
- 80 to 100 percent: labelled as AI
Those bands are the vendor's own cutoffs. They are useful for a quick read but should not be treated as proof. In peer-reviewed work, researchers like Liang and colleagues at Stanford have documented that AI detectors in general produce false positives above 60 percent on text written by non-native English writers, and that short samples give unstable scores. See Liang et al., 2023 for the full study.
The practical implication: a high ZeroGPT score is a reason to review a piece more carefully, not a verdict that it was written by AI. The reverse is also true. A low score does not prove the text was written by a human.
When ZeroGPT Is a Good Fit
ZeroGPT is a reasonable first-pass check for:
- A quick, free read on whether a specific passage looks AI-generated
- Checking which sentences in a longer draft look most AI-like, so you can rework them
- Teaching students what detectors are reading when they flag text
ZeroGPT is a weaker fit for:
- Short samples below about 300 words, where any detector score is unreliable
- Multilingual text or English written by a non-native speaker
- Making a disciplinary decision on its own, which no detector supports
If you need to clean up an AI draft
If your goal is to rework a draft so it reads like a human wrote it rather than to simply test for AI, run it through a humanizer and then edit by hand. Walter Writes offers a 300-word trial with no card required at walterwrites.ai/ai-humanizer, with voice and audience controls that produce more natural output than pure synonym swapping. Verify the current trial terms on their site before using it on longer work.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use ZeroGPT to check text?
Open zerogpt.com, paste text (or upload a .pdf, .doc or .docx file) into the input box, and press the Score Now button. ZeroGPT returns a percentage estimate of how AI-like the text looks and highlights the specific sentences it considers most AI-like.
Is ZeroGPT free to use?
ZeroGPT offers a free tier that works without an account. Paid plans are available for higher word counts, API access and batch processing. Confirm the current limits on their pricing page before you rely on the free tier for a long document.
What does the ZeroGPT percentage mean?
ZeroGPT returns a 0 to 100 estimate of how much of the text reads as AI-generated according to their classifier. 0 to 20 is labelled as human in their published rubric; 80 to 100 is labelled as AI. Values in between are described as mixed or uncertain. Treat the number as a signal, not a verdict.
How accurate is ZeroGPT?
ZeroGPT does not publish an audited accuracy figure. Independent peer-reviewed studies have found that AI detectors in general produce meaningful false-positive and false-negative rates, especially on short samples and on text written by non-native English speakers. Use ZeroGPT as one data point and never as the only basis for a disciplinary decision.
